The Metro Richmond Zoo Is Excited To Welcome The Birth Of Two Wolf Puppies

The Metro Richmond Zoo announced the arrival of two Gray wolf pups earlier this year.

The pups are both males, and they are Nitka and Voodoo’s first litter.

One of the pups is black, while the other is brownish-gray in hue. Gray wolves come in a variety of colors, including white, gray, brown, black, and even a combination of two or more.

Nitka, the mother wolf, began digging a den a few weeks before giving birth. Creating a secure environment for the entrance of her children. The location was beneath the roots of a huge tree.

Nitka eventually gave birth in the 3-foot-deep den she had excavated for herself. She is in charge of her puppies’ care, while Voodoo is in charge of their protection.

Gray wolves can be found in North America. Forests, grassland, tundra, woodland, and desert regions are just a few of the ecosystems they may survive in.

In wooded places, the howl of a gray wolf can be heard from a distance of seven miles. They also mate for the rest of their lives. A wolf pack can range in size from two to fifteen members. Over the years, it has evolved into an alpha male, alpha females, and their pups.

Wolf pups have their eyes closed and are unable to hear when they are born. As a result, they demand continual supervision at first. They also nurse from 4-5 times a day at this stage.

The puppies were ready for their physical examination 9 days after their birth. The brown-gray puppy weighed 3.8 pounds, whereas the black puppy weighed 3.3 pounds.

They first opened their eyes when they reached the two-week mark. Assisting them with standing and walking. They were able to hear as well after another week.

The Gray wolf pups are out of their den and zoo visitors may have a chance to spot them.
